Thirty-five Carlow students, staff, faculty, alums and skilled relatives traveled to New Orleans, LA, March 2-10, 2007, to assist in the ongoing recovery efforts taking place in that city from Hurricane Katrina which hit landfall in late August 2005.
We stayed at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Parish in the Gentilly neighborhood of the Ninth Ward, and worked to restore the homes of 7 mostly elderly families who belong to St. Gabriel Parish.
Our preparation began in October 2006 with weekly meetings focused on team building exercises and activities, education and skill building and communication and fundraising. Each member of the ASB team participated in both group and individual fundraising efforts to cover the expenses for the trip.
In addition to helping to rebuild homes and lives devastated by Hurricane Katrina, members of the ASB team made lasting friendships with one another and with the people of St. Gabriel Parish.
